On Being Useless

Daily Paul - Wed, 2015-03-04 19:52 +0000

A while back, our good friend jrd3820 (I still don't know what those numbers mean) wrote about this wonderful Chuang Tzu parable:

Recently, I have been thinking about another Chuang Tzu tale, the one about the useless tree. One version goes something like this:

A carpenter saw on his travels a gigantic old oak tree standing in a field near an earth-altar. The carpenter said to his apprentice, who was admiring the oak: "This is a useless tree. If you wanted to make a ship, it would soon rot; if you wanted to make tools, they would break. You can't do anything useful with this tree, and that's why it has become so old."

But in an inn, that same evening, when the carpenter went to sleep, the old oak tree appeared to him in his dream and said: "Why do you compare me to your cultivated trees such as white-thorn, pear, orange, and apple trees, and all the others that bear fruit? Even before they can ripen their fruit, people attack and violate them. Their branches are broken, their twigs are torn. Their own gifts bring harm to them, and they cannot live out their natural span. That is what happens everywhere, and that is why I have long since tried to become completely useless. You poor mortal! Imagine if I had been useful in any way, would I have reached this size? Furthermore, you and I are both creatures, and how can one creature set himself so high as to judge another creature? You useless mortal man, what do you know about useless trees?"

"The world is not divided between East and West..."

Daily Paul - Wed, 2015-03-04 19:29 +0000

Marjane Satrapi is the author of the autobiograhical graphic novels Persepolis and Persepolis 2 which have been made into the animated feature Persepholis:

Persepolis is the poignant story of a young girl in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of precocious and outspoken nine year old Marjane that we see a people's hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power, forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless, she outsmarts the "social guardians" and discovers punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden. Yet when her uncle is senselessly executed and as bombs fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq war, the daily fear that permeates life in Iran is palpable.

With his outspoken views against foreign aid and a muscular foreign policy, Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul was less-than-enthused by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech on the Iranian nuclear threat. And people definitely noticed.

I'm putting together a list of "negative info" against Walker.

Daily Paul - Wed, 2015-03-04 10:40 +0000

Yes, I'm doing it. I'm going to "that" level. But, it seems in todays world, the only way to win, or sway a persons position on a candidate is to completely destroy their whole positive outlook on the chosen "victim" candidate (we witnessed this with Ron last election cycle). So, I've decided to start to compile a list of "smears" against Scott Walker, so his dreams about a rise to fame and his presidential aspirations are destroyed/annihilated by littering social media outlets and the email boxes of radio/tv news pundits.

Minimum Wage is Too Damn High

Free Manch - Thu, 2014-03-27 02:18 +0000

On Tuesday March 25th, 2014, five activists from Manchester including myself and Free Manch blogger Joel Valenzuela drove to Nashua New Hampshire to protest the rally to raise minimum wage.  According to the Nashua Telegraph, Vice President Joe Biden was to be speaking at the event.  Unfortunately, Joe Biden did not show.  However, neither did anyone else.  The crowd consisted mostly of activists from Manchester, a friend of the Free State Project (who none of us had ever met), and the local media. The most interesting part of the event was how the “show” went on.  There was no real reason to do a political presentation to just protesters, yet they did it anyways.  The Union Leader interviewed us and mentioned the protest in their article.

What happens when you exercise your rights at the Manchester airport

Free Manch - Fri, 2014-03-21 19:05 +0000

I’m always excited to read the latest edition of News. Yesterday morning, a few friends and I thought the passengers might enjoy reading the message of liberty after their complimentary molestation, so we went to the airport to hand out some papers.

John Adams, Facilities Director at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, did not like the fact that I was handing out free newspapers to passengers. I handed out about five newspapers when Mr. Adams approached me with three cops following behind him. He was very rude, told me that I had to get a permit, stand in one of the two designated soliciting areas (at either outside end of the terminal), and stop handing out material. When asked if I could talk to other people in the public areas, I was told “no,” and the conversation was over. He refused to answer my questions, and refused to talk with me for the remainder of my visit. Hey, I figured he really must be some big-shot if he can override the Constitution.  What authority does this man have that he thinks he can control individuals with his voice? That’s right … “Facilities Director.”

Apparently, the debate wasn’t over. My first act of defiance toward this petty tyrant was to simply to start waving and wishing passengers a safe flight. Hmmm, nothing happened. Maybe this dog was more bark than bite.

After establishing that the airport was public property, yet being told several times that I was not free to be free — end of story — I started asking what would happened if I continued on my heinous crime spree. The debate wasn’t over and finally when asked I was told “If you interfere with the flow of passengers, you’ll be arrested.” SWEET!!! Back to passing out newspapers!

Credit where credit is due, Mr. Adams directs a lovely building. He was even kind enough to provide police escorts for us, the rest of our time in the building. The officers following us around told us they were instructed to follow my every move because I was also exercising my Second Amendment right by carrying a rifle. They seemed to be the only ones alarmed. A lady even came up to me laughing while saying, “You know you are in New Hampshire.”

While I walked around the airport, I wondered: how much taxpayer money goes to Mr. Adams? How can someone in charge of such an operation be totally unaware of the Constitution? It’s really not that hard to figure out. Individuals have a right to assemble and express themselves on public property. That’s it. Mr. Adams was very upset that his words and policies could not stop people determined to exercise their rights.

What happens when you exercise your rights at the Manchester airport? They order you to stop, they harass you, they intimidate you, and they follow you around. Since it’s obvious people are so confused it’s important to stand up and clear things up a bit. Yes, I like the Manchester Airport. I think I’ll go back.

Open Carry and Free Speech Activism at the Manchester Airport

Free Manch - Fri, 2014-03-21 07:26 +0000

On the morning of March 20th, 2014, Joe “Liberty Carrots,” Nemi Jones, Riaz Kahan and I went to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport to support the First and Second Amendments to the United States Constitution.  Joe was the creative star of this activism effort, stopped multiple times by airport security and threatened with arrest for handing out free copies of the monthly liberty newspaper FPPNews from Free Press Publications.

No airport security agents or police questioned the fact that Joe was open-carrying a rifle. They did, however, take great issue with our exercise of free speech and expression:

Critical Mass

Free Manch - Sat, 2014-03-15 01:04 +0000

If there’s one thing the liberty movement at large needs, it’s critical mass. Enough people in one place to actually accomplish something. The Free State Project was founded for precisely that purpose: to bring a critical mass of liberty-loving activists to New Hampshire so that we may have liberty in our lifetime.

Well, if you’ve been around Manchester lately, it’s beginning to look an awful lot like critical mass.

We’ve got a large activism center, the Quill, which is frequented at all hours of the day and night. We’ve got Area 23, an event and classroom space, in constant use throughout the week hosting events and classes on everything from ballroom dancing to home brewing to self-defense.

And don’t even get me started on the Bitcoin community here. Manchester’s Bitcoin meetup has outgrown the biggest establishments in town. The community is big enough, in fact, that I managed to live for a week off of only Bitcoin, while barely trying.

With the right idea and the right motivation, great things can happen. All we need is critical mass. In this area, Manchester is definitely leading the way.
