The original intent was to get this out on President’s Day but it snuck up on me. Then I thought I’d do it for Abraham Lincoln’s birthday which I’ve incorrectly believed to be the 22nd for years now. Yes, that’s Washington’s birthday. I know that now. I’m already sufficiently embarrassed but go ahead and make fun of me for it in the comments. Anyway, it doesn’t matter because I didn’t quite finish it yesterday before I had to take off for some volunteer work I had been scheduled for. So here it is late enough to seem completely off topic.
Excerpts from Lincoln’s first Inaugural Address–
First Lincoln attempts to ease the minds of secessionists by insisting that he’s no threat to the institution of slavery in the U.S.
Apprehension seems to exist among the people of the Southern States that by the accession of a Republican Administration their property and their peace and personal security are to be endangered. There has never been any reasonable cause for such apprehension. Indeed, the most ample evidence to the contrary has all the while existed and been open to their inspection. It is found in nearly all the published speeches of him who now addresses you. I do but quote from one of those speeches when I declare that—
I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.
Those who nominated and elected me did so with full knowledge that I had made this and many similar declarations and had never recanted them; and more than this, they placed in the platform for my acceptance, and as a law to themselves and to me, the clear and emphatic resolution which I now read:
Resolved, That the maintenance inviolate of the rights of the States, and especially the right of each State to order and control its own domestic institutions according to its own judgment exclusively, is essential to that balance of power on which the perfection and endurance of our political fabric depend; and we denounce the lawless invasion by armed force of the soil of any State or Territory, no matter what pretext, as among the gravest of crimes.
And a little further down–
I trust this will not be regarded as a menace, but only as the declared purpose of the Union that it will constitutionally defend and maintain itself.
In doing this there needs to be no bloodshed or violence, and there shall be none unless it be forced upon the national authority. The power confided to me will be used to hold, occupy, and possess the property and places belonging to the Government and to collect the duties and imposts; but beyond what may be necessary for these objects, there will be no invasion, no using of force against or among the people anywhere.
An excerpt from his second inaugural address during which he talks about how God must be on the side of the North due to slavery even though the North still has slaves themselves, just not as many–
One-eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was somehow the cause of the war.
Anarkitty gives us a lesson in personal hygiene. My cat loves to get into this position when guests are gathered all around.
This video will tell you how you can help the injured officer.
The next video shows the horrific assault as it took place. Warning, this video is not for the feint of heart. You may not want to watch this at work where others might be offended by scenes of graphic violence. If you’re impatient, the assault takes place approximately 3 minutes and 20 seconds in.
It’s the second anniversary of a new holiday in New Hampshire. Happy Porcupine Day!
I think someone may have suggested the notion of having an Invisible Hand of the Market character opposing the Iron Fist of the State but if so, I no longer recall who. I apologize for not crediting you, if so.
My new computer had a faulty motherboard which I had to send back. The replacement arrived Monday and I finally got a chance to reassemble the computer including prying the CPU off the heat sink, cleaning all the gook off it, and putting new gook on it (to conduct heat). I hate that there was such a long delay between comics. There is more work to do on it, but at least it’s functional enough to make comics for now.
I wanted to let all my readers know that there is more to come despite a long lag with no posts. The combination of the holidays out of town with no Internet access and the busy work of adjusting to a new computer with a faulty motherboard have delayed progress. The good news is I invested in a new computer primarily in order to make the comics easier. My older computers were starting to lag as I created more and more vector objects on the screen and there wasn’t much room for expansion so I just splurged on a new computer which should make things easier. I expect this to mean more comic updates in the near future once I get the motherboard replaced.
